Abstract

The study presents in details, experimental and numerical studies on the effect
of geometrical and operational parameters on the efficiency of axial-water jet
pumps. Numerical investigation is held firstly to determine the effect of
geometrical and operational parameters such as diffuser angle, mixing
chamber length, pump area ratio and driving nozzle position on the efficiency
of jet pumps for thirty five axial jet pump numerical test cases, using a
commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver ANSYS FLUENT.
SST-turbulence model is used. To verify the numerical model, the results
obtained are compared with the previous numerical and experimental results.
The geometric parameters of axial jet pump examined in the present study are
three geometrical parameters including area ratios: 0.075, 0.108, 0.169, 0.271
and 0.331, mixing chamber lengths: 50 mm, 75 mm, 100 mm, 121 mm, 170
mm, 190 mm, 200 mm, 230 mm, 250 mm, 270 mm, 310 mm and 350 mm and
diffuser angles: 2.5°, 3°, 4°, 5°, 7.6°, 8° and 9°. While the operation parameters
investigated here are relative positions of driving nozzle: 0, 1, 1.87 and 2 and
inflow conditions.
The experimental setup is designed and constructed in the fluid mechanics
laboratory of the faculty of engineering, Menoufiya University to obtain the
experimental data. The measurements have been performed on the optimum
design obtained from numerical investigation.
