Abstract

Choanal polyp is defined as any paranasal sinus polyps that pass through sinus ostia and protrude into the boundary between the nasal cavity and nasopharynx(the choana)(Yanagisawa et al,2005)
This is a prospective study included twenty patients with ACP and was conducted in the E.N.T department of El-Minia University Hospital during the period between January 2016-October 2016.The studied twenty patients underwent the following investigations:Complete history and clinical examination,
Diagnostic endoscopy,Radiological assessment of the lesion :CT.scanning(coronal & axial views),Operative technique,
Follow up CT.(after 4-6 months).
The results were summarized as follows :The mean age of all studied patients was 22,9 ± 7,8 years ranged from12-39 years with main age affection within second and third decades and higher incidence in females (60%)than males (40%) in a ratio of 3:2. The polyp was found more in the left side of nasal cavity 12 patients(60%) than the right side 8 patients (40%).The most presenting symptoms were unilateral nasal obstruction and mucoid nasal discharge .ACP occurrence had little association with allergy and none of our patients had history of asthma .Radiologically , no bone expansion of the antrum or erosion of the bony walls of the maxillary sinus was associatd with ACP.Endoscopically, the origin of the polyp could not be delineated due to edematous inflamed tissues. In our study, all patients subjected to ESS with wide middle meatal antrostomy associated with septoplasty and partial inferior turbinectomy in 9 patients that provided complete removal of the polyp, preservation of the healthy sinus mucosa, decrease recurrence rate, lower incidence of postoperative complications and preferred treatment in young patients still in growth. On follow up of our patients ranged from 5-12 months (variable periods), endoscopic examination and CT. scanning were done and revealed complete healing and no recurrence.
