Abstract

Data of twenty eight patients diagnosed with VS, were collected. The results of the audio-vestibular tests were analyzed.
There was no significant difference in tumor size between the tumors on the right side and those on the left side. Also, there was no significant difference in gender distribution in patients having VS. However, there was significant negative correlation between the age and tumor size. Patients below age of 50 years had larger tumor size than patients above age of 50 years. The main complaint was hearing loss in most of patients followed by tinnitus and finally dizziness. Patients with vestibular complaint had larger tumor size than those without vestibular complaint.
There was no significant correlation was found between the tumor size and the degree of hearing loss at any frequencies from 250 Hz to 8000 Hz. However, significant negative correlation between the speech discrimination score and tumor size was found, as larger tumors had lower discrimination score.
Acoustic reflex had a sensitivity of 74% in diagnosis of VS. It would be increased if more sensitive parameter is considered as the acoustic reflex decay.
ABR was either absent or abnormal in VS ears reflecting sensitivity of 100% in detecting VS of 9 mm or larger.
There was no significant difference in tumor size between patients having partial pass DPOAE results and those having fail results.
In VNG, occulomotor tests were the least sensitive tests for diagnosis of VS. The gaze evoked and smooth pursuit tests had sensitivities of 21% and 43% respectively. On the other hand, eighty percent of VS patients had weak caloric response in the side of the schwannoma ears reflecting an 80% sensitivity of the caloric response in detecting VS. The remaining 20% of patients, who had symmetrical caloric response, had tumor size 13 mm or less. Finally, the overall VEMP sensitivity (absent response and prolonged P1 latency in the cases of intact VEMP response) was 100%.
