Abstract Sandwich panels offer unique structural, thermal and acoustic properties which make them an excellent choice for many engineering applications. Sandwich panel consists of two skins and core between them. This system is used to decrease the weight of the structures. There are varieties of sandwich panels which agree on the face and differ in the core. Foam core, corrugated core, web core and honeycomb core are some examples of the most common cores in the sandwich panels. The current research presents an experimental program that was designed to investigate the structural performance of sandwich walls under compression forces up to failure. In the current research, thirteen sandwich walls consisted of steel skins and foam core were tested. Two different types of sandwich wall; flat and sandwich panels with ribs were studied. The results in terms of ultimate loads, load-deflection curves, load-lateral displacement curves, and modes of failure are presented and discussed. The results of the current experimental work indicated that the presence of ribs in the sandwich wall under compression forces increases their structural performance up to failure. |
