Abstract

Abstract
There exists a relation between frailty and CVD; frailty may lead to CVD, just as CVD may lead to frailty. The relation may also be collinear, because these entities share common biologic pathways. Aim of the work: This study was conducted to assess the correlation between frailty and cardiovascular risk factors (high sensitivity C reactive protein (hs-CRP), abdominal aortic diameter (AAD), carotid intima media thickness (CIMT), ankle brachial index (ABI) and cardiovascular function) among elderly subjects who are asymptomatic for cardiovascular diseases. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional study conducted on 90 elderly participants (60-year-old and above), free of cardiovascular symptoms. They were divided according to modified Fried criteria into: non-frail, pre-frail and frail groups and they were subjected to comprehensive geriatric assessment, ECG, Laboratory investigations (FBS, 2HPP, lipid profile and hs-CRP), Radiology (transthoracic ECHO, AAD, CIMT, calculation of ABI). Results: The study showed that frail elderly had higher right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP), and the percentage of aortic sclerosis was higher in both frail and pre-frail groups. ECG showed that, frail participants had higher percentage of major ECG abnormalities. Frailty is associated with elevated serum level of hs-CRP, FBS and 2HPP. They also had low serum levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL-C and HDL-C. It is also associated with lower means of ABI, higher CIMT values. Higher mean of AAD despite not reaching a significant level.
Conclusion: The study concluded that there is an association between frailty and cardiovascular risk factors, hs-CRP, AAD, CIMT, ABI and cardiovascular function.
Keywords: Frailty, CV risk factors, hs-CRP, ABI, CIMT, and AAD
