Abstract

The present study comprised of 50 tissue blocks of primary colorectal adenocarcinoma which were chosen randomly from the archive of Pathology Departement, Minia University Hospital and Minia Oncology Center in the period between january 2012 to december 2015. Five tumors (10%) were well differentiated while 31 (62%) and 14 (28%) were moderately and poorly differentiated tumors, respectively.
HER2 expression was significantly higher in poorly differentiated tumors than well and moderately differentiated tumors and was significantly higher in lymph node positive tumors compared to lymph node negative tumors. Moreover, HER2 expression was significantly associated with tumor stage, being more expressed in advanced tumors stages. Although there was no significant association between HER2 expression and tumor location, HER2 expression tended to be more frequent in distally located tumors.
No significant association was observed between HER2 expression and patients’ age, sex, tumor size, tumor location, lymphovascular invasion, tumor infiltrating lymphocytes or surgical resction margin state.
Regarding, HER3 expression, it was significantly associated with tumor location. As it was more expressed in rectum and sigmoid colon than the remaining parts of colon. HER3 expression was also significantly associated with tumor stage and grade, being more expressed in stage B and C as well as moderately and poorly differentiated tumors.
No significant associations were found between HER3 expression and other clinicopathological parameters.
On studyiny the combined expression pattern of HER2 and HER3 in relation to different clinicopathological parameters, combined HER2 HER3 expression was significantly associated with high tumor grade, lymph node metastasis, advanced tumor stage and lymphovascular invasion.
No significant association between combined expression of both markers and other clinicopathological data was identified.
