Abstract Background: Bacterial vaginosis is the commonest cause of vaginal discharge occurring in women attending gynecological clinics in our country. BV represents a unique upheaval of the complex vaginal bacterial flora with the disappearance of Lactobacilli and its replacement by a mixed flora of aerobic, anaerobic and microaerophilic species. Aim of the Work: To compare between the efficacy of vaginal vitamin C and oral metronidazole in treatment BV. Patients and Methods: Study design: Randomized clinical trial. Setting: This study was carried out at Ain Shams Maternity Hospital out-patient clinic, in Period from August 2016 to February 2017. Population of study: Participants: who were recruited from the out-patient Gynecological clinic in Ain Shams Maternity Hospital. Results: The current study revealed a statistical significant improvement in number of patients who received vaginal vitamin C than those received metronidazole regarding the four parameters of Amsel criteria. The cure rate was (98%) of patients who received vaginal vitamin C, while (78%) of them after oral metronidazole. Conclusion: vaginal vitamin C was safe and more effective in treatment of BV than oral metronidazole; according to Amsel criteria, vitamin C resulted in better outcomes in curing the symptoms. Recommendations: Encourage pharmaceutical company to start manufactures the optimal dose of vitamin C and in multiple forms to be available. Trials test effect of acidity and risk or incidence of Candidial infection after the acidic treatment, and if needed to selective Candidial treatment with stop acidification. Vitamin C can be used as a model treatment of BV. |
