Abstract

Background:cervical cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide and the fourth leading cause of cancer death in women. MRI has an important role in assessing local extent and distant spread of cancer due to its excellent soft tissue and high contrast resolution which enables differentiation between cancerous and normal tissues. MRI has wide field of view by the multicrosssections (axial, cronal, sagittal) and lack of ionizing radiation in comparison to CT SCAN. MRI is far more reliable than physical examination in assessing tumor size and it is highly accurate in diagnosis of bladder and rectal invasion.
Aim of the study: The Aim of work is to highlight the role of MRI in early detection & staging of cervical cancer to guide for accurate management.
Conclusion:MRI is widely accepted as an ideal modality for local and distant staging of cervical carcinoma, and it has very high accuracy when performed with appropriate technique and image quality. MRI is useful in determining the feasibility of fertility sparing surgery, as well as determining whether a patient is a surgical candidate based on parametrial involvement. Also it has been shown to be cost effective by eliminating the need for additional imaging or surgical procedures.
Functional MRI is very useful in assessment the disease response to chemoradiation and differentiates residual or recurrent disease from radiation fibrosis. Thus, functional MRI is valuable in deciding the treatment strategies.
MRI is a non-ionizing non-invasive imaging study that provide more information than clinical examination for the evaluation of patients with cervical cancer and its results may be used by clinicians to make appropriate therapeutic decisions.
