Abstract The main objective of the thesis is photocatalytic degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) using ZnO nanoparticles. Parameters studied are: initial dye concentration (values were tested 5, 10, 15, 30 and 50 ppm), photocatalyst concentration (values are tested; 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 g/l of dye solution) and pH of the solution (the values tested are pH 2.2, pH 7.2 and pH 12). Experimentation on different concentrations of ZnO showed that 0.4 g ZnO/l of effluent is the most suitable catalyst concentration. Photocatalytic processes were found to work better in base medium and the study showed a pH value of 12 results in higher percentage degradation than other medium. Studying the effect of the initial MB concentration on the percentage dye degradation demonstrated that the degradation of MB generally increased when decreasing its concentration. An optimization study using RSM was performed for determining the optimum values for the operating parameters. |
