Abstract Substance dependence is a chronic, relapsing condition characterized by waves of abuse, decreased use and abuse again. More .than one attemEt is usually needed before a person successfully quits or gets use under control (5, ). Failure of substance dependent patients to abstain their addiction is caused by various factors including the difficulty of initiating and maintaining drug free life style, lack of readiness for change, low self efficacy and hopelessness in addition to life stressors and quality of life (7-12). Readiness for change, self-efficacy and hope are among the factors that play an important role in the treatment _ of substance dependence by influencing patients to seek, comply, and complete treatment as well as make successful long-term changes (13, 14). The present study aimed to assess readiness for change, self-efficacy and hope among substance dependent patients: Materials & Method , The study was conducted at El-Maamoura Hospital for Psychiatric Medicine in Alexandria. Subjects comprised 200 detoxified substance dependent patients free from psychiatric eo-morbid diseases and non alcoholics. _ The follmying tools w~r~ used for data collection: A socio-demographic and clinical data interview schedule to elicit socio- demographic and clinical characteristics of substance dependent patients. To assess various study variables the Stages of Change Readiness and Treatment Eagerness Scale (SOCRATES), Drug abstinence Self-Efficacy Scale (DASE) and the Herth Hope Index (HHI) were used. These tools were tested for validity and reliability. - Method used for data collection was personal interview with each patient each patient. The interview time ranged between 30-45 minutes.
