Abstract

Thrombolytic therapy is an established treatment for acute myocardial infarction, the benefits of which are time-dependent. Coronary care nurses are often the first professionals to assess patients with suspected myocardial infarction on hospital admission, and there are a number of practices for immediate assessment and management. Data was collected at a coronary care unit affiliated to a university hospital in upper Egypt. Three tools were utilized; included: background data, Thrombolytic knowledge questionnaire and Thrombolytic management observational checklist. Results : revealed that majority of the studied subjects (86.7%) have got unsatisfactory knowledge scores about thrombolytic therapy. Regarding practice, 90 % of the studied subjects have got unsatisfactory scores about thrombolytic therapy. Conclusion Critical care nurses have inadequate knowledge and practice regarding selected thrombolytic therapy and no correlation between knowledge and practice. Recommendations: The study recommended offering educational programs and upgrading courses armed with evidence based guidelines based on nurses’ needs to improve their knowledge and practice related to administration of thrombolytic therapy. Moreover , Follow up of nurses’ practice in relation to administration of thrombolytic therapy is recommended.
