Abstract

I
ntellectual disability affects about 2–3% of the general population.
Mental retardation can be attributed to many causes and factors either genetic or environmental.
Our study included 35 patients complaining of mental retardation. MRI done to all of our patients.
Our study revealed that MRI is an informative diagnostic modality in mental retardation.
We classified the detected MRI structural abnormalities to ventriculomegaly 58% (reflecting central brain atrophy), white matter abnormality 33.33%. prominent supratentorial / infra tentorial extraaxial CSF spaces29% (the former is reflecting cortical atrophy), corpus callosm abnormalities 20%. basal ganglion abnormalities 16.6%. cerebellar atrophy16.6%. vermis abnormalities 12.5%. dysplasias (cerebral cortical 4% or cerebellar 8.3%), and brain stem abnormalities 4%.
Developmental delay presents with a wide spectrum of etiologies, clinical findings and MRI features ranging from completely normal to abnormal. The present study could establish the various morphological appearances of developmental delay on MRI and further categorize them into various subgroups paving way for treating clinicians to plan proper management and parent counseling.
Further serial and sequential MRI may be necessary to ascertain disease progression. Advances in MR Imaging technologies like Functional MRI, MR Spectroscopy, Diffusion Tensor Imaging & Tractography especially in structurally normal brain of such children, would provide more yielding information
