Abstract

Chamaerops humilis L. is a medicinal plant which belonging to family Arecaceae. In this study we present the isolation of the major compounds present in the leaves of Chamaerops humilis L. and the determination of the biological activities such as anti tumor, antioxidant, antimicrobial and hepatoprotective activities of the crude extract and fractions. The structure of the isolated compounds were confirmed using spectroscopic data; 1D and 2D NMR as well as HRESIMS analyses and the other structures of minor constituents were confirmed using LC/ HRESIMS analysis. Anti-tumor , antimicrobial and anti-oxidant activities were carried out on the crude extract and fractions while hepatoprotective effect was carried out on the crude extract only. Estimation of nutritive and minerals value as well as amino acids content were carried out for the pollen grains and the fruits.
Phytochemical investigation of the leaves of Chamaerops humilis L. resulted in the isolation and identification of (6) glycosides, tricin, and Pregnane-3,5,6,16-tetrol , β-Sitosterol and oleanolic acid. Results showed that the crude extract had hepatoprotective activity at a dose of 125 mg/kg body weight, while fractions showed, moderate anti-oxidant activity and weak anti-tumor activity.
It is worthy to say that apigenin 6,8-di-C-glucoside, β-Sitosterol and oleanolic acid are reported for the first time from the leaves of C. humilis L.Keywords: Chamaerops humilis L.; Glycosides; Hepatoprotective; Anti oxidant, Anti microbial, Sterols.
