Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the amount of stresses transmitted to mesial and distal peri-implant area from four implants splinted by bar attachment with posterior cantilever extension and without cantilever extension to retain palateless overdenture. Material and Method : four implants was placed bilaterally in lateral incisor and the first premolar positions of edentulous acrylic resin maxillary model; connected by bar with 7 mm posterior cantilever extension with soft liner on the intaglio surface of the denture was used. Eight strain gauges were bonded to the acrylic resin at the mesial and distal surfaces of each implant, stress was measured, then the 7 mm cantilever extension was cut and the stress measured for the bar without posterior cantilever extension. Result : Bar with posterior cantilever extension demonstrate a significant increase in stress compared to the bar without cantilevers in unilateral loading (UL) and bilateral loading (CL). During unilateral loading in bar with cantilever extension and bar without cantilever the maximum stress was recorded at distal side of anterior implant of loading side. Conclusion : The four implants connected with the bar without posterior cantilever extension demonstrate the lower stress than with cantilever extension.
