Abstract

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease has gained interest as a major public health concern. It is currently the focus of intense research because of its persistently increasing prevalence, mortality and disease burden. COPD is characterized by airflow limitation that is not fully reversible. The airflow limitation is usually progressive and associated with an abnormal inflammatory response of the lung to noxious particles or gases. AECOPD is associated with increased risk of short-term mortality and impaired respiratory health status. Exacerbations are also costly, making prevention of it an important goal of COPD management. It has been recognized that COPD involves several extra pulmonary features, indicating that it is a systemic disease, and that one of the major systemic features is weight loss. Weight loss has been postulated to be the result of a high metabolic rate that is not compensated for by increased dietary intake. The cause of this elevated metabolism is a matter of much debate, and several factors have been implicated. Reduction in body weight by more than 10% of the ideal weight is an independent negative prognostic factor. Loss of lean body mass also results in peripheral muscle dysfunction, reduction in effort tolerance and poorer quality of life. Similarly, the processes underlying depletion of muscle mass and function have not been fully delineated. The parameters used to assess nutritional status in COPD patients will depend on the availability of resources but they should at least include weight, height and BMI. If possible these variables should be complemented by assessment of lean body mass and muscle mass, using either skin fold measurement or bioelectrical impedance analysis The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of nutritional status on the outcome in hospitalized patient with exacerbation of COPD. This study was conducted on 40 COPD patients they were selected from Al- Mahalla chest hospital from April 2014 to April 2015. Age of studied patients was from 40 to 69 years they were 26 male and 14 female.
