Abstract Using an Inquiry- Based Approach to Develop EFL Secondary School Students’ Writing Skills Dissertation Abstract This study aimed at developing some writing skills for first year secondary stage students through using the inquiry- based approach (IBA). To fulfill the purpose of the study, three instruments were constructed; a list of writing sub- skills, a writing performance test, and a writing scoring rubric. The study adopted the quasi- experimental design. The sample of the study consisted of 60 students from first year of Kafr Ghanam secondary school, at Sinbellawin, in Dakahlia Governorate. They were divided into two groups; each comprised thirty students. The control group was taught using the common methods prevailing in teaching writing, while the experimental group was taught using an inquiry- based approach. During experimentation the students were asked to perform inquiry- based writing activities. After experimentation, both groups were tested using the pre- posttest. Findings revealed that an inquiry- based approach is effective in developing writing skills for secondary stage. While using this approach the students had to read, discuss and analyze the target texts which writing tasks are based upon. Students also had to gather information concerning the texts they are working on, analyze and classify the gathered information and develop ideas for the writing tasks. Planning, drafting, revising, and written feedback from the peers and the teacher proved to be effective in developing secondary stage students’ writing skills.
