Abstract The color dye (sunset yellow E110) used in one of commercial beverage namely Mirinda has been investigated in relation to their photo stability as well as another color dye (ponceau 4 R) for comparison. Mirinda was found to contain sunset yellow E110 as coloring dye in concentration 1.9 x 10-4 M. Sunset yellow E110 dye solution are not stable upon subjection to sunlight, solar simulator or Argon laser .UV radiation significantly enhance the degradation of a study food dye. The degradation products in case of sunset yellow E110 as sulfanilic acid sodium salt and the sodium salt of 2 – naphthalene sulphonic acid - 5 – amino - 6 hydroxyl which is classified as aromatic amines. Aromatic amines in general are reported in literature to posses health hazards being cancer suspect materials. Some literature include aromatic amines as a chemical carcinogenesis. The photo degradation of sunset yellow E110 was archived at different light intensity (400,500 and 600 Watt), different source of light (solar radiation, solar simulator and Argon laser) and different pHs (5, 7, 9, 11). A complete decolourisation is obtained for the degradation induced by all sources of light There is no significant effect of any sources of light (solar light, solar simulator or Argon laser) on ponceau 4R dye. The degradation rate of sunset yellow E110 for different light intensity goes in the order 600 > 500 > 400 Watt which is the same order of light intensity. The degradation rate of sunset yellow E110 for different source of light goes in the order solar simulator > solar radiation > argon laser which is the same order of UV radiation presence. The degradation rate of sunset yellow E110 for different pHs goes in the order 9 > 7 > 3 > 5 > 11. There is no significant effect of any sources of light (solar light, solar simulator or Argon laser) on ponceau 4R dye. photochemical quantum yields (c ) have been applied for sunset yellow E110 and ponceau 4R throughout this study and absorption coefficient for two dyes has been applied also. |
