Abstract The present experimental study was conducted to evaluate histologically the effect of Easy graft on the healing of surgically created bone defects in osteoporotic animals. The study was performed on eight healthy adult male rabbits; the animals were given methylprednisolone 1 mg/kg/day intramuscular injection for 4 weeks and low calcium diet (bran bread) for the same period to produce osteoporosis. For each rabbit surgical cavity was prepared through right and left tibia to make a bone defect model using 4.5 mm in diameter surgical bur. Easy graftcrystal was placed into the bone defect of the right tibia (study side-group II) while the other bone defect in the left tibia was kept to heal spontaneously (control side-group I). Wound closure was done bilaterally. The rabbits were sacrificed at two- four-six and eight weeks intervals. The tibia was dissected. The specimens were fixed in 10% formalin for several days, and processed routinely to obtain sections that will be stained with hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) and Trichrome staining for histological evaluation. When comparing the control group (group I) and the study group (Group II), at the different follow-up periods, it was found that the grafted sites showed accelerated bone formation; osteoblasts and islands of woven bone were seen earlier and osteogenesis continued at the 8 post-operative week. New mature bone was achieved in the group II (study group). |
