Abstract

Systemic inflammation could be one of the serious cascades of developed after exposure to ionizing radiation. Radiolysis of cellular water will produce reactive oxygen derivatives such as the hydroxyl radical (OH•) that may interact with cellular component and macromolecules (DNA and proteins), endly provoke inflammation reactions. Cranberry like other fruits is also rich in phenolic phytochemicals such as phenolic acids, flavonoids and ellagic acid which can function as effective anti- oxidants due to their ability to quench free electrons. Phenolic antioxidants can therefore scavenge the harmful free radicals and thus inhibit their oxidative reactions The present work was to elucidate the possible role of cranberry extract against inflammatory responses induced in gamma irradiated rats The experimental animals were exposed to whole body gamma radiation (2 Gy every 3 days up to a total does of 8 Gy lasted for 9 days) at dose rate 0.48 Gy/min and received daily oral administration of 0.5 ml cranberry extract (≈100 mg/kg/day) for 14 consecutive days before starting irradiation and the treatment was extended during exposure to radiation fractions for 9 days.
