Abstract

The present study included the examination of 1610 samples of faecal and nasal swabs from living birds and internal organs (Lung liver, intestine) from ailing and slaughtered diseased bird of different species of poultry chickens, ducks and turkeys). Out of 780 samples collected from chickens, 201 (25.77%) proteus isolates were recovered from different samples. The highest recovery rate was recorded from faecal swabs 104 (48.3%), followed by nasal swabs 46 (21.4%). Then from the internal organs 30 (30%) isolates were obtained from intestine 9 (9%) from lungs and 6 (6%) from livers, while 6 (12%) isolates of proteus were recovered from unhatched eggs. Out of 570 samples from ducks, 98 (17.2%) proteus isolates were obtained, 53 (26.5%) from faecal swabs, 28(14%) from nasal swabs, 12 (30%) from intestine, 2(5%) from lungs, 3 (6%) from unhatched eggs, proteus species could not be isolated from liver specimens.Out of 260 samples from turkeys, 40(15.38) isolates wereobtained out of these 17 (17%) from faecal swabs, 9 (9%) from nasal swabs, 1-4 (23.3%) isolates were recovered from turkey eggs. Proteus mirabilis showed much higher incidence of isolation (90.56%) than Proteus vulgaris (9.44%).
