Abstract

The Central venous lines (CVLs) are increasingly used. with nurses
heavily involved in their management. The aim of this study was to
assess the effect of CVL bundle interventions on patient‘s outcome.
The study hypotheses were improvement of physicians and nurses‘
level of performance toward application of central venous line
bundle interventions. And improvement of patient outcomes. This
quasi-experimental study with pre-post assessment was carried out
in the cardio-thoracic Intensive Care Units at Ain Shams University
Hospital. It involved 50 nurses, 27 physicians and 220 patients. Data
collection tools included physicians and nurses’ assessment tools,
observation checklist for nurse’s practice, central venous catheter
insertion audit tool, patient assessment sheet, and unit policy
assessment checklist. The researcher developed and implemented a
training program to participants. The results revealed that
participants had deficient knowledge of the CVL bundle and related
infections, and their performance, whether audited or observed (for
nurses) was inadequate. Assessment of the unit policy regarding
nosocomial infection control showed deficiency in most structure
items, and improved patient’s outcomes. Hence, it is recommended
to make sure the availability of human and non human resources to
ensure for proper implementation of the bundle components in the
hospital.
