Abstract Nitric oxide is a unique neurotransmitter, which participates in many physiological and pathological processes in the organism. Because of its gaseous nature and short life time, it shows several unusual features: it is not stored in vesicles, it is freely diffusible after synthesis, and its action is limited to the vicinity of the production site. Its gaseous nature precludes its direct detection so different methods have been used to identify nitric oxide synthase (NOS), the synthesis enzyme of NO. |
