Abstract

Catfishes of the genus Clarias are economically important fishes inhabiting the inland fresh, or sometimes slightly waters of many parts of the world particularly in tropical end subtropical regions. According to Herald fishes of this genus are widely distributed from Africa to the east Indian Archipelago and at least one species, Glarias batrachus, has been recently introduced into Guem and Hawaiian Islands and has become established there. The increasing importance of Qlarias is attributed not only to its importance as food but also to its successful cultivation and rearing in many countries of the Near and Far East including Egypt In fact, Clarias is considered one of the ideal examples in pond culture, This the ability of this fish to survive in a restricted environment of poor oxygen it may also survive out of water for a longer time than any other catfish spp. These conditions facilitate its transport over long distances. Moreover, the fish is sturdy and can be easily adapted to artificial feeding beside it grows rapidly giving high production and its flesh more or less ensures a considerable price. In Egypt, Clarias is indigenous in River Nile. It is common in Lake Nasser and all Nile branches, streams and irrigation canals as well as the brackish coastal Delta Lakes.
