Abstract This study was conducted to detect the cutaneous manifestations of hormonal contraceptives in comparison to non hormonal contraceptives. During the period of the study extending for ten months. Our study matched 45 women using hormonal methods for contraception against a comparable group of 45 women never used hormonal methods for contraception before. The minimum duration of contraceptive use was 6 months and women included in the study were in reproductive age (18-42) years. The cutaneous manifestations were demonstrated in 100% of the cases using hormonal contraceptives compared to 11.1 % of the cases never used hormonal contraceptives before. The cutaneous manifestations observed in the group using hormonal contraceptives are: melasma (37.8 %), hair loss (26.7 %), urticaria (11.1 %), paronychia (6.7 %), acne vulgaris (4.4 %) hirsutism (4.4 %), alopecia areata (2.2%), erythema nodosum (2.2 %), erythema multiforme (2.2 %) and herpes gestation (2.2 %). The corresponding manifestations in the other group are: melasma (6.7 %) and hair loss (4.4 %). Melasma in our study is mostly diffuse type of the cutaneous manifestations occurring among women taking hormonal contraceptives, hair loss is the second common type of the cutaneous manifestations coming after melasma in women using hormonal contraceptives. Also in the other group melasma and hair loss are the most common type of the cutaneous manifestations. Hormonal group showed higher frequency of dermatological diseases than non hormonal group. Women in reproductive age taking hormonal contraceptives in the following order: combined oral contraceptives (48.9 %), progestin only pills (24.4 %), injected progestins (15.6 %) and transdermal patch (11.1 %).Women taking non hormonal methods for contraception in the following order: intrauterine device (82.2 %), female condom (6.7 %), male condom (4.4 %), safe period (4.4 %) and cervical cap (2.2 %). |
