Abstract With increasing private traffic on roads, more mobility related problems, such as congestion, air pollution, noise pollution, and accidents, are created. Public transportation is very important means to reduse traffic congestion, to improve urban environmental conditions and consequentlyaffects people social lives. Transfore, the need for new public transportation infrastructures for serving new towns and/or improving existing transportastion structures to cope with such increase is an urge. Planning, designing and managemnent of public transportation are the key issues for offering a competitive mode that can compete with the private transportation. These transportation planning, designing and management issues are addreased in the transit network design problem (TNDP). The main purpose of this research is to develop a noval solution methodology for the TNDP which goes beyond previous traditional sophisticated approaches. The solution methodology adopted in this research for the TNDP is based on partitioning the solution into two consecutive stages; Transit route Network Design Problem ”TrNDP” stage (planning side) and frequency setting stage (operational side). In first stage, a deterministic solution for TrNDP is tackled to construct bus routes. The deterministic manner of the TrNDP solution relies on using linear and inyeger mathematical formulations that can give an exact solution for the TrNDP. The main obkective of the route design stages is to maximize direct demand coverage without violating other parameters of design, such as macximum route length and route network directness. |
