Abstract This study was done to evaluate the orthodontically induced apical root resorption using multi-slice spiral computed tomography after retraction of the maxillary anterior teeth. For determining the apical root resorption: tooth length was measured as the distance from the apex tip to the midpoint of the incisal edge and the duration of treatment was calculated in days from the start of treatment to the end of incisors retraction. Calculation of root resorption was made by CT measuring of the difference in tooth length after, compared to before treatment. The second aim was to compare the accuracy of dental measurements taken with Boley gauge on plaster dental casts and those taken from computed tomography scans of the dentition. On the basis of the results of the present study, the following could be concluded: high sensitivity of the multi-slice spiral CT for detection of external apical root resorption following treatment and the accuracy of the digital study models in comparison with the standard plaster models. |
