Abstract

schizophrenic patients are prone to many physical comorbidities that affect their mental illness as well as their total quality of life and may push them to premature death, with many studies reported thatindividuals with schizophrenia develop serious medical co morbidities that result in a lost life span of 15 to 20 years compared to the general population.
Recently, more alarming evidence indicates the risk for lost years of life has accelerated to 25 years earlier than the general population
This study designed to assess the prevalence of medical and psychiatric findings in hospitalized schizhrenic patients. We also tried to find most prevalent medical and psychiatric findings in hospitalized schizophrenic patients in relation to some factors as diagnoses, age and demographic criteria of patients. It was done during the period from August 2012 to October 2013, in Benha mental health hospital .
The study included 100 subjects divided into 2 groups:
1. Patients group contain 50 subjects who are hospitalized for schizophrenia and these subjects were randomly selected from patients who were hospitalized during the study timeaccording to the study’s inclusion criteria.
2. Control group contain 50 subjects who are age and gender matching the patients group, and these subjects were randomly selected from people that work at hospital which are free from schizophrenia during the study time according to the study’s inclusion criteria.
All subjects participated in the study were subjected to the following scheme of evaluation:
1) ICD-10 Symptom Checklist for Mental Disorders.
2) A Semistructured interview (please see appendix) included :
i. Semi-structured Sociodemographic : This was used to record Sociodemographic profile of the subjects including age, marital status, occupation, educational level.
ii. Semi structured for detecting medical &psychiatric findings: This had three subcomponents:
a. History taking including current illnesses & current medications usage with indications, doses and duration of usage.
b. Investigations
General physical examination :
Results of the study:
- Medical and psychiatric findings are significantly higher in schizophrenic patients than in age matched subjects who are non schizophrenic subjects.
- There is a significant relation between age & occupational status of hospitalized schizophrenic patients in one hand and number of detectable medical and psychiatric findings in other hand, where elder age and being occupationally not working are associated with more medical and psychiatric comorbidities.
- Psychiatric comorbidity is higher in schizophrenic patients than non schizophrenic subjects
- Paranoid schizophrenia is the most diagnosis present in our study
- Smoking is higher in schizophrenic patients than non schizophrenic subjects
- Substance abuse higher in schizophrenic patients than in non schizophrenic subjects
