Abstract
Atomic power is associated in the public mind with the
destruct! ve force of atomic and nuclear weapons. However,
being on the brink of the 21st century, faith in controlled
atomic fission is being shown with the obvious increase in
the construction of atomic power stations, as well as use of
radioactive materials in various aspects of life.
Civil engineering is one of the major fields that
profited from the properties of radioactivity. Soil mechanics
being one of the main branches of civil engineering, plays
a very important role in the radiological field of work since
soil characterized with certain properties could be used as a
shield for certain radioactive materials, as well as the
enveloping material for radwaste repositories. Radioactivity
is also useful in the study of soil properties.
