Abstract

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after at least one year of unprotected intercourse.
Although the prevalence of infertility has probably remained constant in the past two decades, attendance of patients for fertility treatment has increased dramatically all over the world.
Careful assessment of the infertile couple is essential before planning their management. Traditionally, the cornerstones of assessing an infertile couple have been grouped into five testing categories. These include: semen analysis, assessment of ovulation, evaluation of uterine architecture and tubal patency, the post coital test and laparoscopy.
Studies of populations of patients with infertility indicate that approximately 10-25% have unexplained infertility, 20-30% ovulatory dysfunction, 20-35% tubal damage, 10-15% sperm dysfunction, 5-10% endometriosis, 5% cervical mucus problems, and 5% have coital dysfunction.
The rationale for the use of IUI in the management of infertility is to reduce the effect of factors that may impede the progress of spermatozoa, such as vaginal acidity and cervical mucus hostility, and to benefit from the deposition of a bolus of concentrated, motile, morphologically normal sperm as close as possible to the oocytes.
The reasons for the failure of repeated insemination could be due to lack of response to endometrial lining of the uterus and many of the diseases of the uterus such as lack of endometrial thickness and immunological factors can reduce the response of the uterus.
Endometrial scratching done in day 21 of the cycle preceding the IUI cycle is a procedure less expensive, stressful, complex and invasive than other assisted reproductive technologies.
This study was done to assist the effect of endometrial scratching among women who underwent IUI on pregnancy rate.
The study was done at Minia Infertility Research Unit between January 2012 and January 2013.
The study included 100 infertile women who were randomly allocated into two groups, the study group included 50 cases who underwent endometrial scratching in the day 21 of the cycle preceding the IUI cycle , while the control group (50 cases) nothing was done in the cycle of IUI.
