Abstract

This study was conducted at Sohag University Hospital from August 2011 to April 2012.
The aim of this study was the assessment of knowledge of CHD and its risk factors among women attending the outpatient clinic in Sohag university hospital and their knowledge about methods of prevention.
A questionnaire was developed to collect data about knowledge and awareness of coronary heart disease among women attending the outpatient clinic. The questions focusing on awareness of risk factors, subjects information about the disease and their source of information, whether coronary heart disease is a leading cause of death in women or not, diagnosis, methods of prevention and their illness and if they take medication.
This questionnaire was distributed to 700 women attending the outpatient clinic at Sohag University Hospital, their ages ranged between 20 and 60 years. The study was approved by the scientific and ethical committee at Sohag Faculty of Medicine. Informed consents were obtained from all participants. Data were edited and entered on Excel 2007. frequency and percentage were calculated for categorical data.
The findings of our study show that the current level of awareness of coronary heart disease among women in our locality is less than optimal specially for information about the disease, diabetes mellitus, menopause and family history risk factors, and their awareness of the symptoms, methods of diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease.
In spite that most of the participated women are aware of smoking, obesity, hyperlipidemia and hypertension as risk factors for CHD and methods of prevention they are in need for raising level of awareness regarding practical avoiding of risk factors specially obesity, passive smoking and following ways of prevention of coronary heart disease.
