Abstract Obesity is a major health problem. It has been shown that genetic, enviromental factors as well as consumption of high caloric diets are the main factors in developing obesity.Obesity is widely recognized as a strong risk factor for metabolic and cardiovascular diseases (CVD). It has also been recently appreciated that obesity is associated with a chronic inflammatory reaction in adipose tissue and that this inflammation is closely associated with metabolic and CV risk.Adipose tissue from obese animals or humans is characterized by the influx of inflammatory cells, primarily macrophages, into its stromovascular compartment with increased local production of proinflammatory cytokines and increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that lead to decreased expression of antioxidant enzymes. It was also described that human adipocytes release asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) and express the whole gene set that codes for the enzymatic machinery tha regulates ADMA production and degradation. |
