Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the toxic effects of one of atypical antipsychotic drugs named clozapine in short -term experiment on albino rats and manifested microscopically in liver and kidney tissue. In addition, the role of HP and WGO as a protective agent for improvement of deleterious effects of clozapine in short-term experiment was investigated. Clozapine (CLZ) was given orally 3times/week for 6 weeks at a dose of 27.0 mg/Kg B.W. rat. In all groups, CLZ, HP and WGO were given directly into the stomach using a gastric tube. It was determined that CLZ led to adverse alterations in the majority of the oxidative stress markers where it increased lipid peroxidation in clozapine-administered rats and make the values of SOD and GSH significantly different of that of the normal control rats. Some biochemical parameters related to liver function, kidney function and lipid profile were altered in clozapine-administered rats. Hypercium perforatum and Wheat germ oil supplementation caused significant improvement in different biochemical parameters and oxidative stress markers. Key Words: Biochemical Alterations - Clozapine- Hypercium Perforatum-Whcat Germ Oil.
