Abstract

A total number of 1q7 native breed goats of both sexes
and 1-3 years age were included in this investigation.
The animals were classified into fo1~owing groups:-
Group I included (42 and 14) clinically healthy goats
and subdievided into:-
a) Fourty-two goats were fed dry ration (summer time).
b) Fourteen goats were fed green ration (winter time).
Group II fourteen goats were offered ad-libitum
quantities of crushed sorghum.
Group III fourteen goats were offered ad-libitum
quantities of crushed wheat.
Group IV fourteen goats were offered ad-libitum
quantities of wheat flour
Group V Nine goats were used for intra-rumina1 acidosis
for each animal succharose was used in a dose of 20 gm/kg
B.W.
from each animal two blood sa.ples were obtained. The
rir5~ blood sample was collected for blood gas analysis in which a solution of (1000 units/ml) sodium heparin used as
anticoagulant. Blood gases and acid-base measurments were .
performed by C~RNING pH blood gas analyzer Model-168. The
measured parameters of blood gases and acid-base balance
were: hydrogen ion concentration (pH), carbon dioxide tension
(Pc02mmHg.), oxygen tension (P02 mmHg.), bicarbonate
(Hco; mmol./l.), total carbon dioxide (Tc02 mmol./l.) and
base excess (B.E. mmol./L.).
The second blood sample was used for determination of
serum sodium (Na+ mmol./L.), potassium (K+ mmol;/L.) and
chloride (cl- mmol./L.) levels. The levels of serum sodium
and potassium were determined by means of Flame Photometer
CORNING Model 400 (England Essex). Serum chloride was
determined using CORNING Chloride Meter Model 925 (England).
P.C.V. was determined according to the ordinary methods
of laboratory haematology using a microhaematocrit tube and
a microhaematocrit centrifuge.
The mean values of blood pH, Pc02 ’ Po2, Hco;, Tco2, B.E.,
P.C.V., serum Na+ , serum K+ , and serum cl for the goats
clinically healthy in summer time (control group) were
7.442.::.0.040, 36.244.::.3.997 mlllH”.32.237 + 6.773 mmHg,
26.574 + 2.614 IIImol./L.,26.16 .::3..297 IIIl11oI./l~., 3.140
2.934 mmol./l., 25.00~ 5.129~, 154.72~ 6.869 IIImol./l.,
5.340 + 0.364 mmol./l. and 106.600 + 5.358 mmol./L. respectively. Goats offered ad-libitum quantities of crushed sorghum showed significant difference (P<0.05) in values of blood pH (7.406 + 0.031) and base excess (-0.750 + 2.748 mmol.fl.)only.
Signi ficant difference (P ’-0.05) were detected also
in blood pH (7.382 ~ 0.083) and B.E. (-2.240 ~ 5.575 mmol.fl.)
in goats offered ad-libitum quanti tis of crushed wheat.
While the goats offered ad-libitum quantities of wheat
flour showed highly significant difference (p<O.Oll in
blood pH (7.250 ~ 0.072) and B.E. (-7.173 ~ 4.898 mmol.fl;),
and significant difference (P,,”0.05) appeared in blood Hco;
(19.62 + 4.003 mmol.fl.), Tc02 (21.164 + 4.256 mmol.fl.) and
P •C .V. (34. 0 ~ lj.~557% ).
Highly significant dropping (P<O.Ol) in values of
blood pH (7.015 ~ 0.232), Hco; (11.380 ~ 3.886 mmol.fl.),
Tc02 (12.900 ~ 4.002 mmol.fl.), B.E. (-19.880 ~ 9.895 mmol.fl.) and P.C.V. (41.0 ~ 2.302S) were observed in goats infused with succharose solution per os (via stomach tube) at 12 hour. So minor effect was observed in animals offered crushed sorghum, while the severe illness was observed in animals subjected to intraruainal ac:ininist:ratiownith succharose.
The clinical sl.ns appeared on experi_ental goats varies
from mild depression-semisolid faeces-slight increase in respiratory rate and pulse in goats offered crushed sorghum,
to severe dullness and depression, watery diarrhea, significant increase in respiratory rate and pulse, completely ceased ruminal movements, recumbancy of goats at 12 hours post
infusion with succharose intraruminally ~via stomach tube).
Fluid therapy was applied for the animals having a signs
of ruminal acidosis (dullness, depression, recumbancy and
comotosedl. The cases which had treated as early as possible
showed a marked effect progress and improvement in the
condition was observed.
The mean values in the goats 1 hour post treatment with
fluid therapy for blood pH, Pc02, P02, Hc03, Tc02, B.E.,
p.e.v., serum Na+ , serum K+ and serum cl were:
A more pronounced improvement of the condition was
observed following the second dose of fluid therapy. The mean
values of the same parameters in 9,oats 6 hours after administration.
