Abstract

Under nutrition is the most common disease in the world to affect the physical development of the child. Preschool appear to be the major risk group all—over the world. Approximately, 300 millions preschool children (60% of the total preschool populations of the world) suffer from some degree of moderate to severe protein energy malnutrition (Kaplan, 1972).
In children with clinical signs of protein calorie malnutrition, serum total protein and albumin levels are usually markedly lowered (Whithead and Alleye, 1912).
protein calorie malnutrition are usually associated with mild hypoglycaemia.
Fructosamine test is a new calorimetric assay desinged to measure serum glycosylated protein concentration (Johnson et al., 1983).
Lim and Stanley (1986) noted that serum fructosamine level reflects the degree of glycation of serum total protein.
Serum protein concentrations become important only in patient with severe hypoalbuminaemia (Baker et al., 1983).
Day a al. (1919) showed that albumin was quantitatively the most important glycosylated plasma component. This finding supported by Yue et al. (1980).
Fructosamine gives informations regarding the degree of glycaemia in the preceding two or three weeks (Baker at al., 1983). This period is similar to that found by Doihofer and Wiehand for glycated albumin and by The et al. for glycated protein in serum.
It is expected that the marked reduction in serum proteins and glucose levels may be refelcted on the serum level of fructosamine if this changes are steady and constant, so the aim of this work is to study the magnitude of hypoproteinaemia and hypoglycaemia and their correlation with the serum fructosamine level in protein colorie malnutrition.
