Abstract

The present thesis deals with the topic of interfacial waves.
This type of waves occurs on the common surface between two or
more layers of liquids or fluids. The main cause of these waves is
the gravitational field. In this thesis the study is confined to two
layers of incompressible inviscid fluids of which the lower fluid
lies over the inclined plane rigid bottom.
This problem is met with in oceanography. Oceanographers
have shown the importance of internal gravity waves within regions
of the ocean with substantial density stratification. As it is already
known in oceanography the density of sea water is effectively
dependent on three variables, namely: pressure, temperature and
salinity which is a measure for the proportion of dissolved salts
matter. Research ships equipped with instnnnents called
”Temperature-salinity-depth” recorders showed that the density
changes due to variations in temperature and salinity are much
more important for internal waves dynamics than the variations in
pressure.
