Abstract

The Aluminium-Silicon eutectic alloy is one of the most important alloys used in manufacturing a certain number of products subjected to different loads For this reason , it must have good mechanical properties. The improving of the mechanical properties can be avhieved by using alloying elements , heat treatment and modification……etc.
The improvement of the mechanical properties is the result of affecting the macrostructure and microstructure of producte I, e. affecting the grain size. The refinement of grains can be achieved by several methods such as modification, vibration…..etc. In this investigation, the modification was used to improve the mechanical properties.
The modifier used in this work is the mischmetal which contains 51.4 % Cerium (Ce). 28.9 % Lanthanum (La), 1.63 % Iron (Fe) AND 18.07 % of other rare earth elements.
The mischmetal was wrapped in aluminium foil paper from 0.05 wt. percent to 4 wt. percent and put in the molten metal. After preparing the macrostructure, microstructure and mechanical properties specimens, a significant results were obtained at 1.5 wt, percent mischmetal addition. The mechanical properties changed for ultimate tensile strength ( U. T. S. ) from 98.8 Pa as without addition to 115.7 MPa after 1.5 wt. percent addition of mischmental. Also . a markedly change in the number of grains which changed from 20 grains.cm2 at without addition to 50 grains /cm2 at 1.5 wt , percent mischmetal addition.
This work also include the effect of modification on the wear characterics using a pin on ring made of either steel or cast-iron configuration. The lowest rate was achived at 0.8 wt , percent addition of mischmetal on the cast-iron ring, but the waer rat increases by increasing the mischmetal on the addition on the carbon steel ring.
