Abstract

This thesis includes publishing a collection of 17 Coptic ostraca. This collection is found from El-kharga from two sites are:
-Ain Labakha (at the north of El-kharga)
-Maks Qibli (at the south of Kharga) and the ostraca of this site found from two villages called Ain Waqfa and El-hesn.
Only four Coptic ostraca, from El-hesn, kept in the Kharga Museum but the other ostraca kept in the Kharga store of ancient Egyptian antiquities.
All the ostraca are sherds and they are excavated since 1986 by SCA.
The thesis is divided into an introduction followed by 4 chapters. The introduction is talking about the sites where this collection is found.
The first chapter entitled as ”COPTIC LETTERS” containing 8 letters (5 private, one official and 2 unclassified letters).
The second chapter as ”A LIST OF NAMES AND A SIGNATURE” containing two ostraca represented a list of personal name and a signature of a person called Pihwr.
The third chapter entitled as ”UNIDENTIFIED TEXTS” containing 7 fragments of unidentified Coptic texts.
The fourth chapter entitled as ”NOTES ON THIS COLLECTION” deals with notes on the dialect, the proper names, the titles, the jobs, the epithets, the grammar, the paleography, the orthography, the pottery and the date. In addition, notes on the ancient Egyptian influences on the texts.
As for the date, it is suggested that the date of the ostraca from El-hesn as the 7th -9th century but the ostraca from Ain Waqfa and Ain labakha are dated from the 4th century AD.
Finally, there are the conclusion, the bibliography, the indexes and the plates.
