Abstract Left ventricular dysfunction is a common finding in patients with severe coronary artery disease and represents myocardial ischemia symptomatic or asymptomatic. Such dysfunction probably occurs early in the time course of every ischemic episode in patients with coronary artery disease whether symptoms are eventually manifested or not [Pepine, 1986]. Silent (painless) myocardial ischeinia has an adverse effect on both left ventricular systolic and diastolic functions and its alleviation leads to marked improvement in both functions [AbcI-Ei-Aziz ci aT, 1992]. Studies are needed to show if the pathophysiology of silent (painless) versus painful left ventricular dysflrnction due to myocardial ischemia is identical or not. If such studies proved that silent (painless) ischemia is identical to angina pectoris in a pathophysiologic sense, the prognosis and the treatment should be the same. The aim of this work is to compare left ventricular dysfunction due to silent myocardial ischemia with that due to angina pectoris. |
