المستخلص

One of the most recent followed trends is the tendency to achieve sustainable urban development. As maintaining a balance among competency, justice, sustainability and human safety is one of the most important concerns that has been stressed in the nineties, the need to formulate a methodology to apply the sustainable urban development raises to ensure directing the urban development towards continuity and sustainability. Therefore, it is necessary to focus the research on directing local communities’ development processes towards communication, continuity and making the best use of resources to follow up the exacerbation of environmental, urban, social and economic problems with the increase in city size and population since the delay in implementing the correct policies in developmental processes leads to increase problems and its solutions. In the recent study, the researcher seeks to find a methodology to apply and implement sustainable development policies in local communities in Egypt with Tanat as a case study. Although, there are some i;evelopmental processes in Tanta, it suffers from urban and environmental proJlems. Some of these processes are unsustainable and do not positively exploit the resources and future needs. The researcher seeks in his study to solve this problem to redirect the developmental path towards sustainable development which is discussed in the following five chapters as follows: This chapter includes basic defmitions and concepts of sustainable development and its formation. Sustainable development is ”the development which achieves the needs of the present generation without ignoring the needs of future generations” as defined by Rundtland Report as the most widespread definition. There is a difference between sustainable development and inappropriate development which does not sustain the environmental resources and their continuation
