Abstract
The present study was conducted on 342 cattle; 349 buffaloes; 790 goats and 431 sheep of various ages and sexes at three localities (Zagaig, Abukbir, Hihia) at Sharkia province, Egypt during the period extended from the beginning of May 2011 to the end of April 2012 to determine the prevelance of ectoparasites, their seasonal abundance, age and sex susceptibility of these animals to the infestation, as well as identification of examined ectoparasites.
The results showed that overall infestation rate of ectoparasites
among the species of animals was 63.60%. On the prevelance of
ruminant’s ectoparasites, lice infestation was the highest 29.23%,
followed by mite 14.85%, fleas 12.92%, ticks 5.86%, while blood
sucking flies infestation were the lowest 0.05%. The infestation rate was
71.05%, 68.48%, 73.29% and 35.96% in cattle, buffaloes, goats and
sheep respectively. The infestation rate of cattle, buffaloes, goats and
sheep with lice was 24.27%,34.10%,37.85% and 16.47%, while that of mites 17.25%, 31.23%, 7.72% and 12.76% respectively, in ticks were
29.53% and 3.15% in cattles and buffaloes respectively also that of fleas were 27.72% and 6.50% in goats and sheep respectively and the
infestation rate of blood sucking flies (0.23%) only recorded in sheep.
The results showed that, there are seven species of lice were recorded (Bovicola caprae, Haematopinus tubrculatus, Haematopinus eurysternus, Linognathus stenopsis, Linognathus vituli, Linognathus africanus and Linognathus ovillus), three species of mite (Psoroptes natalensis, Psoroptes cuniculi and psoroptes ovis), two species of hard tick (Boophilus annulatus and Rhipicephalus sanguineusy; one species of
fleas (Ctenocephalides canis )and one species of blood sucking flies
(Hippobosca equina).
