Abstract

The primary objective of the work presented in this thesis was undertaken with a view to establish environmentally sound conditions for pretreatment, and dyeing of linen fabrics. The properties of the so pretreated fabrics vis-a-vis those conventionally pretreated were thoroughly investigated. Also investigated are the behaviors of easy care fmishing fabrics as well as bio-finishing linen fabrics.
Specifically, the thesis is divided into four chapters as follows:
Chapter I, is a literature survey categorized into three main topics, namely, flax fibers, environmental impact of wet processing of textile mills and the new trends for environmental wet processing of linen fabrics.
Chapter II, The combined scouring and cationization was carried out with three different techniques, the pad-dry-cure, the cold¬pad-batch and the exhaustion techniques, using NaOH and CR-2000. Factors affecting cationization reaction of linen fabrics were studied. These factors include (a) CR-2000 concentration! NaOH concentration, (b) reaction temperature and (c) duration of cationization. The cationized samples were evaluated for nitrogen content, wettability and weight loss.
Results obtained indicated that, efficiency of cationization of linen fabric with CR-2000 depends upon the application technique and the conditions used in each technique.
