Abstract

Background: Universal precautions (UPs) can be defined as recommended work practices to protect Health Care Workers (HCWs) from exposure to blood born pathogens, and prevent nosocomial transmission. Aim of the study: this study was conducted to assess universal precaution (UP) among health care workers in Rural Health Units. The study sample consisted of all Health Care Workers (HCWs) in each of the seven Health Care Units and Health care Center (n = 143). Setting: This study was conducted at Health Care Units in Ashmon district, Menoufiya governorate. These health units were one health care center in Ashmon, Mahlet sobk, Samaliy, Samadon, Albarinyia, Gereas and Monsa. Tools used were (1) structure an interview questionnaire used to collect data from Physicians, Nurses, Laboratory and workers assistance related to demographic data and knowledge related to universal precaution. (2) Practices related to universal precautions collect data from all health care workers about universal precautions. The main findings: The relationship between knowledge about standard procedure for infection control (IC) and demographic data among the studied groups. There was a statistical significant difference between years of experience and knowledge. where the less the years of experience the better their knowledge, the relationship between knowledge about personal protective equipment and demographic data among the studied groups, sowed that there was no statistical significant differences between years of experience and knowledge, this means the less the years of experience the better their knowledge. The majority of nurses apply all the steps of using PPE except for wearing protective Eyewear (49.2%). As for the lab assisted 75% used gloves while the majority didn‟t use PPE. Conclusions: revealed that. Attendance of training courses for infection control among the workers, nurses and lab assistant were high compared to about one third of doctors who attended training courses about universal precautions. Regarding knowledge about standard procedure, the findings showed that nurses had lower score than doctors and lab assistance. Recommendations: Regular periodic in-service training programs should be activated and be available for all health care workers to keep them up-to –date regarding the infection control measures and to provide all Health Care Workers( HCWs) of updated knowledge and practice regarding infection control.
