Abstract

The present study was carried out on fifty cores belonging to the Cretaceous of four wells (Gibb Afia-I, Betty-J , Salam-IX, and Mersa Matruh-J ) located at the northern Western Desert to get more information about the Cretaceous sedimentary sequence and to evaluate hydrocarbon potentiality of source rocks and storage capacity of reservoir rocks. The studied area is located between latitudes 29 ْ 37 , 59” N - 31 ْ 19 ’ 43 ” N and longitudes 26 ْ 20 ’ 12 ” E - 27ْ 26 , 45 ” E The sedimcntological studies include pctrographical, mineralogical and geochemical studies. These studies were applied onthe investigated core samples to elucidate the different facies which
were recorded at the four wells and their depositional environments as well as the mineral composition of the studied sediments. Different types of porosity have been identified based on the petrographie investigation of the studied thin sections. intergranular, fracture. oversize. moldic and intercrystalline porositics.
