Abstract This study is an experimental and clinical study was designed to determine the effect of local simvastatin application on bone defect healing. Simvastatin powder was mixed with sterilized distilled water in a ratio of 0.5 mg/ ml. This solution of simvastatin was mixed with gelatin sponge as a carrier. The experimental part of this study comprised twenty one guinea pigs. Each animal was subjected to Simvastatin implantation in an induced bony cavity in the mandible. The clinical part included 14 patients having maxillary cystic lesions. They were divided into two equal groups. In the first group after cystic enucleation, the resultant bony defects were grafted with simvastatin. Radiographic evaluation was done by computed multislice CT scan immediately after surgery, 3, 6 and 9 months after surgery to calculate: Relative area of bone defect. It can be concluded that:-Simvastatin is safe and well tolerable when applied locally into critical sized jaw bone defects. Simvastatin is an effective osteoinductive material that enhances bone regeneration. |
