Abstract

Recent educational strategies in undergraduate medical education include the SPICES model which describes six educational strategies in trying to shift from traditional to new innovative approaches in medical education. By the application of this model, the students will take more responsibility for their own learning and medical education will be focused on common health problems of the community.
There is a need to move from opinion-based to evidence-based medical education which encourages the use of trustable research findings to replace personal opinions as a basis for decision-making in medical education. In addition simulation-based medical education and clinical skill laboratories are unique approaches to make and learn from mistakes and reduce occurrences of errors in real life.
Similarly, task-based learning is expected to produce Graduates whom are better prepared for self-directed, life-long learning, while in outcome-based medical the emphasis is on the final product - what sort of doctor will be produced - rather than on the educational process. For proper application of these new strategies we also need to change the role of teacher in the medical education process.
In recent strategies we need to integrate public health and clinical teaching in order for the graduates to be able to deal with public health problems.
This essay addressed two examples of application of the new strategies in medical education in Egypt. The first is in ”the Faculty of Medicine, Suez Canal University”, while the second example was ”Mansoura-Manchester program, at the Faculty of Medicine, Mansoura University”.
