Abstract

Studies reported herein “Faunistic Survey of Certain HemipteraHeteroptera Associated with Selected Agro-and Semi-arid Ecosystems in Egypt with Notes on its Natural Enemies” are part of an ongoing SFC grant supported by the United States Department of Agriculture. The principal objective of this project “Natural Enemies of Lqgu.f and Associated Plant Bugs in Upper Egypt” is to search for promising natural biocontrol agents, especially parasitoids, of Lygu_-5 spp. and other closely-related Miridae for possible introduction into the United States.
Extensive and, to a certain extent intensive, surveys of the Hemiptera-Heteroptera inhabiting typicla agro and semi-arid ecosystems were the cornerstone of this investigation. The survey covers the heteropteran complex with special emphasis on Miridae. In order to fulfill the principal objective of the project, parasite recovery trials and predaceous studies were strictly limited to members of Miridae.
The general objectives of this investigation are: (1) to determine the most significant loci as well as low population sites of Lygu4 spp. and/or closely related genera, (2) to determine the faunistic composition of the heteropteran complex and the associated predaceous arthropods on different host plants in as many survey areas as possible, (3) to outline the host range of recovered heteropteran species, (4) to elucidate any possible affinity of certain heteropterans to given host plants, (5) to study patterns of abundance (maximum and minimum ebbs) of selected heteropteran species and their associated predaceous arthropods, and (6) to establish a laboratory technique for recovery of egg and nymphal parasitoids on Miridae.
Results of the faunistic qualitative survey have led to the following:
(1) An annotated taxonomic list of the Hemiptera-Heteroptera inhabiting agro-and semi-arid ecosystems. Identification was carried out by specialists of the US Systematic Entomology Laboratory and British Museum (N.H.) (pg. 14).
