Abstract

The present investigation aimed at assessing the utility of (barley anther culture technique for the in vitro selection in of frie plants resistant to fusaric acid and lines tolerant to al inity
Three populations (A, B and C) of barley (Hordeurn vulgare) were used as anther donor plants each of which involved in its parentage the variety Igri as a source of responsiveness in anther culture.
1) In vitro selection for fusaric acid resistance:
Anthers were cultured on induction medium supplemented with 0.0, 0.2 and 0.3 mM fusaric acid. Plantlets were regenerated on toxin free media. Plants were tested for their resistance to 0.0, 0.6 and 0.8 mM fusaric acid.
The results obtained could be summarized as follows:
1) The presence of fusaric acid in the induction medium sharply reduced the regeneration rate from 173.5 green plants/1.000 anther on control medium to 14.67 and 2.4 green plants on media containing 0.2 and 0.3 mM fusaric acid, respectively.
2) The presence of 0.3 mM fusaric acid in the induction medium had a mutagenic effect expressed as elevated percentage
