Abstract
The present investigation was carried out on Coleus, a plant characterized by its magnificient leaf colouration, and its easy vegetative and sexual reproduction whioh make it very suitable for using as a laboratory material.
The research included principally two parts, first the treatment of C. blumei with coichicine in an attempt to induce polyploidy; second a cytological study for five species of Coleus aiming at counting chromosome numbers and studying chromosome behaviour in meiosis The results may be summarized as follows :
1. Three concentrations of coichicine solution were tried. These were 0.1, 0.25, 0.50 per cent, also two methods of treatment were used, these were (1) the wetting of apical buds, (2) the injecting of shoots.
2. Treatment with the high concentration of coichicine resulted in the death of the young plants of 3 months Olde Low concentrations of coichicine ( 0.1 per cent) had no effect in inducing polyploidy in Coleus.
3. PoJ..yploidy was induced in plants of 8 months old by the use of different concentrations of coichicine.
