Abstract

The aim of the work was to describe and analyze the demographics, the causes of injury, the amputation levels and the clinical evaluation of the cases admitted to the emergency department in Alexandria Main University Hospital through a period of six months starting from November 1st 2008 to April 30th 2009. During this period we had 250 victims who constituted our study population.
Each patient’s admission sheet, cases and records were analyzed.
The data included were the patient personal data, causes of the injury, description of the injury, the hemodynamic stability of the patients, clinical examination of the cases, investigations and the amputation levels.
Trauma is an important cause of amputation in our country, especially among young, working individuals. Because of the significant disability that is often associated with amputations, it is important that we develop a better understanding of the demographics, causes, mechanisms and the long term outcomes of these patients.
