Abstract Demulsification is one of the continuous problems in wastewater treatment and this emulsion was found during petroleum and petrochemicals industries. This process carried out demulsification of kerosene/water emulsion in electrical cell which contains two horizontal Al screens (anode) and horizontal Al square plate (cathode) at the cell bottom. Electro-coagulation is carried out in an electrolytic cell with Al anode, the anodically dissolved AI+++ neutralize the negative charge present on the colloidal particle (or kerosene DROPlets) with a consequent destabilization of the colloidal solution or the emulsion. Demulsification of oily waste water by electrocoagulation takes place within 30 min. The present work shows that the removal percentage increases with decreasing initial concentration of kerosene, decreasing NaCI concentration, decreasing temperature of emulsion, increasing current density and the maximum removal percentage within pH range 6-7.
